Dans un monde parallèle façonné par des super-héros, les « aventuriers costumés », autrefois célébrés, ont été bannis par une société désenchantée par le vigilantisme. Aujourd'hui, en 1985, le meurtre du comédien, un héros devenu agent du gouvernement, attire l'attention de Rorschach, le dernier des justiciers hors-la-loi.
